Right to sue India in International Court 2015

There have been speculations among the Nepalis if India has imposed blockade at the Nepal-India border points. A closure of major entry points into Nepal means preventing the entry of necessary supplies into the country. Although talks about blockade are not unfounded, it looks like this time it is just a security tightening and not an actual barricade. It could also be that the psychological fear expressed by the Nepalis via media could have stopped India from doing what it has done in the past.



Although a sovereign country, Nepal has had to always dance to the tunes of India just because it is economically, politically and, most importantly, geographically in a weaker and disadvantaged position than India. Due to the sensitive relation between India and China, and also because of the rugged border with China, it is difficult to get the necessary supplies into Nepal from across the Chinese border as it is from the open border with India in the plains. India has often used this disadvantage against Nepal.

Be it the overthrow of the Rana regime, the Panchayat days under absolute monarchy, reinstatement of democracy in 1990, and now when Nepal has been declared a secular republic state, the southern neighbor has always played its trade-and-transit-barrier card during major political events in Nepal’s history.
